The King of Negativity

The leader and eponym of "Nightmare's Pantheon". Nightmare is a dangerous primordial deity seeking to spread fear and negativity throughout Multiverse TAU, to which he has gradually amassed a small group of dangerous monsters; criminals, cannibals, outcasts and murderers, all of whom either caused incredible misery in their original universes, or were willing to cause it in order to escape them. However, given that TAU is mostly populated by monsters — under normal circumstances, entities known for clinging to love, hope and compassion — recent years have seen him beginning to flag behind his twin, the more beloved half of the "twin deity" responsible for maintaining the balance of emotion after the destruction of their primordial organ half a millennium ago.Nightmare's goals and nature alike remain points of fierce contention... but if nothing else, the fact remains that he is a force of nature as cold and unknowable as the ocean's depths, backed by men who bear his black mark with pride.

Basics

Origin Point

Nightmare is one of the few entities in existence who only appears once per multiverse, which means that his universe of origin is only referred to as TAU-DT-0 — an anomalous world killed in its infancy by the events that brought "The King of Negativity" into existence. Nightmare and his twin, Dream, were both originally born as lesser spirits intended to protect and care for Nimh, Tree of Feelings, who was one of the last primordial organs of M-TAU. Nimh was thought to have functioned as the rough equivalent of a liver or a dream, filtering out and digesting the multiverse's excess emotions and producing fruits which contained a potent but poorly understood byproduct. When Nightmare was estimated to have been roughly 6 years old, however, he partook of one of the fruits that coincided with the emotion he embodied, causing a reaction roughly as volatile as the splitting of an atom, and effectively leading the world to its end. And yet, despite TAU-DT-0 having long-since been transformed into a wasteland, the world is still active by technicality — occupied by the husks of the villagers that once lived there, their corpses both artificially preserved and animated by remnants of the negativity that atomized their souls half a millennia ago.The exact events that led Nightmare to eat from Nimh are widely (and vehemently) debated, with the only surviving witness — aside from Nightmare himself — being his twin. Upon Dream's recent recovery from the petrified state the initial blast of negativity put him into, he claimed that Nightmare was tempted by a demonic force which resided inside the fruit, and sold his soul in exchange for its power. And although it's impossible to prove whether or not he's correct, in the many years since, Nightmare has certainly proven himself a dangerous and enigmatic force of nature, traveling from universe to universe to enact acts of guerrilla terrorism with methods that have only gotten crueler and more effective with time. Likewise, in response to his twin's opposition and counteraction, Nightmare began to hire dangerous monsters from M-TAU's dying worlds......creating the very beginnings of the terrorist group now known across the multiverse as "Nightmare's Pantheon".
